Airport Security Plan Explanation
The terrorist activities of September 11, 2001 have changed all our lives. Since September 11th, the FAA and Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics have been prompted to ask airports to create security plans for general aviation and air transport airports. This correspondence is meant to inform you of our plan and its mission of increased airport security.
This plan takes a common sense approach to execute. As users of the airport, I am asking you to remain alert to all airport activities. Use your eyes and ears to increase awareness of all the activities which are occurring every time you enter the airport property. Be alert to anything unusual, use common sense, and rep[ort suspicious activity appropriately. Please post this plan in a visible area in your hangar and review it regularly. Our Plan consists of three basic areas:
1. Increase communication between airport tenants, airport manager, and law enforcement. Below you will find a contact list for airport personnel and other law enforcement agencies. During business hours, contact the airport manager or W.F.S. personnel to report suspicious activitiy. Beyond normal business hours, use the contact list, beginning with the airport manager.
EMERGENCY CONTACT LIST
Tenant Contact Info All airport tenants should keep the following information up to date with the airport manager. Clubs and aircraft with multiple owners, please have individuals forward this information to the airport manager.
You can email this information to the airport manager at taildraggerflyer@yahoo.com or send the information to: Wausau Downtown Airport, 725 Woods Place, Wausau, WI 54403
2. Identify Specific Suspicious Airport Activity. Below you will find "General Aviation Security Information - What To Look For" describing what activities should be considered reportable to airport management and law enforcement. When reporting activities involving aircraft, please try to record the following information: Aircraft make/model, colors, N#, unusual aircraft modifications, date/time of activity, description of pilot/passengers. |

3. Increase Awareness of Wausau Airport Security Issues Electronic Security Gate - Only airport tenants will be issued cards. Cards will be issued to tenants through the airport manager. Flying Clubs and aircraft with multiple owners must furnish the airport manager with a list of members/owners which are eligible for gate cards. Airspace/Airport Closure Signs - Signs will be installed on the electronic gate and at the entrances to the FBO building alerting pilots of airspace or airport closures. Do not rely on these signs exclusively for the latest airport/airspace closure information! Always call FSS for the latest TFR/NOTAM flight information. Taxiway Barracades - Barracades will be installed on taxiways whenever a non-weather related closure of the airport is necessary. This will restrict access from the ramp and hangar area to the runways. Bulletin Board - In the flight planning room will be a bulletin board posting the latest security information including, airport or airspace closures, latest Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR)/NOTAM's, Emergency Contact list and a copy of the Airport Security Plan. Airport Fencing - Obviously, the fencing around the airport is not substantial and was not designed with security in mind. It will most likely be replaced by 2006. Until then, please alert airport management to the following: broken fencing, open/unlocked gates, people "jumping" the fence to gain access to airport property, "non-aviation" people on the airport operations area (by runways/taxiways/ramp). All gates should be locked except the pedestrian gates by the FBO (only one of those will be unlocked after hours). Lock Aircraft & Hangars - Whether you going out for a short flight around the patch, are finished flying for the day, or are leaving on an overnight adventure, please be sure to close your hangar door and lock up. Lock your aircraft inside your hangar, if possible. Exterior Lighting - Please notify airport management if any of the lighting systems at the airport are inoperative including the parking lot lights, ramp lights, and exterior lighting on the hangars, so they can be repaired promptly. Also report any runway lighting systems which are not working. Airspace Closure Procedure - An airspace closure over Wausau can only be done by the FAA. If the FAA should close the airspace, we will post signs on the entrances to the FBO/Terminal building saying "AIRSPACE CLOSED". A similar sign will be posted on the electronic gate going to the T-hangar area. Be sure to call Green Bay FSS prior to every flight to receive the latest update regarding Temporary Flight Restrictions & NOTAMS. Airport Closure Procedure -The airport manager makes decisions about closing the Wausau Airport. If the airport is closed, we will post signs on the entrances to the FBO/Terminal building saying "AIRPORT CLOSED". A similar sign will be posted on the electronic gate going to the T-hangar area. Be sure to call Green Bay FSS prior to every flight to receive the latest update regarding Temporary Flight Restrictions & NOTAMS. If the airspace is closed, this does not necessarily mean the airport is closed. Also, if the airport is closed, it does not mean that the airspace is closed. As a regular airport user, we are asking you for help. You can be the eyes and ears of our airport security plan in areas and at times when airport personnel cannot. Thank you in advance for your assistance. if you have any questions or suggestions regarding this plan, feel free to contact me at taildraggerflyer@yahoo.com or call 715 845-3400. |
