Recreational Pilot

General Requirements

· Applicant must be at least 16 years old to solo, 17 to earn license

· Be able to read, speak, and understand English

· Pass a written, multiple choice exam, with at least a 70%

· Receive an FAA Medical from an Aviation Medical Examiner

Training Requirements

· A minimum of 30 flight hours

· At least 15 hours dual instruction

· At least 3 hours solo flight time

Limitations & Privileges

· A Recreational Pilot may carry no more than one passenger

· Pilot cannot fly more than 50 nautical miles from the departure airport

· This limitation may be exceeded with an endorsement from a Certified Flight Instructor

· Pilot cannot operate in Class A, B, C, or D airspace

· Pilot cannot fly between sunset and sunrise

We do not guarantee a student will solo in 25 hours or receive a recreational pilot license in 40 hours.  These figures are only estimates of the actual cost.  The cost for each individual varies with several factors such as aptitude, frequency of lessons, and pre-flight preparation. 

Most students pay as they fly, however, financing may be available from your personal bank or credit union.  Other potential financing information is available through Pilot Finance

An FAA medical certificate (Class III or better) must be obtained.  Prices between doctors may vary, but the average cost is $125.00. 

The cost for the recreational pilot knowledge exam is $90.00. 

Current cost for a Recreational Pilot Practical Test (Check ride) with a local designated examiner is $200.  This quote is based on using our Cessna 172.
