Jordan’s Corner

I recently finished reading The Proficient Pilot by Barry Schiff, and at the end of the book he addresses some common fads and fallacies.  He explored one such fallacy by posing a question:

Consider two pressure systems; one is a high while the other is a low.  Two airports, one in each of the systems, are at sea level, and observers at each report identical weather conditions: clear skies, light winds, and standard atmospheric conditions.

Each of two pilots flying identical light airplanes departs simultaneously from each of the airports.  Everything else being equal, above which of the two airports will one pilot encounter better climb performance than the other (the pilot in the high pressure system or the pilot in the low pressure system)?

Think about it and drop me a line (auw2fly@hotmail.com)and let me know what you think.  I’ll give the answer in a reply e-mail, and I’ll also post it in next month’s newsletter.

Last Month’s Contest

Bob Wylie, Keith Kocourek, Jesse Janz, Mike Stuermer, Dave Zoromski, Tom Voelker, Dave Conrad, and Todd Littfin all identified Shell Lake, WI (SSQ).

The drawing was done by Syd Cohen and witnessed by John Chmiel.  The winner for the month was Mr. Jesse Janz!

Good luck to everyone on this month’s question!

Wausau International Airport?

The Falcon 900 based here in Wausau turned the Wausau Downtown Airport into the Wausau International Airport, if only for a day.

The Falcon flew non-stop from KAUW direct to EINN, which is located in Shannon, Ireland to pick up passengers.  It took just over eight hours for the jet to make the trip across the pond.

Youth Flight Camp Dates Set

We decided to do things a bit differently this year and offer a sort of beginner and an advanced class.  Our “Junior Aces” camp is for kids ages 8 & up, especially those who have not participated in one of our previous camps.  Our “Top Gun” camp is for kids ages 10 & up and is specifically designed for those kids who have taken part in an earlier camp.

Junior Aces

The Junior Aces will build an AMA Dart, get an airport tour, build balsa gliders, learn about basic aerodynamics, and get an EAA Young Eagle airplane ride.

Top Gun

The Top Gun camp will build a more advanced rubber band model, learn about weather, more advanced aerodynamics, and will get an opportunity to fly an airplane themselves, and navigate a cross country flight.

Both camps will be the week of June 18—22, 2007.  The Junior Aces camp will run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, and the Top Gun camp will run from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  The cost for Junior Aces is $49.00 and the Top Gun class costs $99.00.  The cost for both includes the airplane ride, model materials, and a t-shirt.

We are looking for volunteers to help out with the kids.  Knowledge about airplanes, aerodynamics, models, etc… not required.  We just need some extra eyes and hands.  If you can help out please call or e-mail us.

To sign your child up, call us at 845-3400 or drop us an e-mail with your child’s name, age, camp they will be attending, and a contact phone number.  Parents are welcome to stay and help out as well!

At this year’s Wisconsin Aviation Conference, held at the beginning of May in Stevens Point, Wausau Flying Service, Inc. received two very distinguished awards.

First, Wausau Flying Service, Inc. was awarded the Aviation Business of the Year by the Wisconsin Aviation Trades Association (WATA).  The award was given in recognition of innovation, leadership, and service to the aviation community.  WATA is an organization that looks out for and protects the interests of fixed base operators and their customers.  WATA has been around for over 60 years.  They provide a means of communication between FBO’s, the State of Wisconsin, the FAA, and other aviation organizations.

Also, the Wisconsin Airport Management Association (WAMA) awarded Wausau Downtown Airport manager John Chmiel its Distinguished Service Award.  This honor is given in recognition of extraordinary service to aviation in Wisconsin.

Annual Stall/Spin & Tailwheel Clinics Successful!

Over 40 people attended the two hour Stall/Spin Clinic in April put on by WFS instructor John Chmiel.  As you can see, the room was packed and extra chairs even needed to be brought in!

The tailwheel clinic in May was also a success and had about 20 people attending.  The tailwheel clinic is designed as an introduction to tailwheel aircraft as well as a refresher course for those who may not have flown a tailwheel in a while.

Both clinics were free and open to anyone with any level of pilot skill.  If you missed this years clinics, don’t worry!  Both clinics will be in our Adventure Line-up again next spring.

WFS, John Chmiel, Receive Honors!

Fundamentals of the Instrument Scan DVD For Sale

The Fundamentals of the Instrument Scan DVD is a great tool for pilots starting their instrument training, and even new instrument pilots.  This DVD is used by flight schools throughout the country as a way to introduce VFR pilots to the proper method of instrument scanning.

The DVD was made by local pilot, Central Wisconsin air traffic controller, and regular at Friday Lunch Club, Robert Staehling.

The DVD is only $15.95 and is now for sale at Wausau Flying Service.  If you are thinking about getting your instrument rating or refreshing your instrument skills, this DVD is a must!

B-29 & Waco Glider Donations

A B-29 model of the “City of Madison” was recently donated to Wausau Flying Service by the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame and Le Roy Stuczynski.  The model was build by Hal Otterback and features the exact same nose art as the actual “City of Madison” that flew towards the end of World War II.

Although no members of the crew were actually from Madison, the crew chose to name it after Wisconsin’s capitol because it was a city that almost everyone had visited at some time or another.

The plane flew multiple missions over Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe, and lost and engine and sustained minor damage from ground fire during one night raid.

Wausau Flying Service now also has a model of the Waco CG-4A combat glider.  This is the same glider that Syd Cohen and other volunteers are restoring.  The model is a great example of what the gliders looked like, and what the finished project glider will look like as well.

The model was built by Jack Burkam of Merrill and is now hanging in the lobby of Wausau Flying Service.

Thank you to Jack, the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame, and Le Roy Stuczynski for these great models!

Wausau Flying Service Hires Chris MacAdams

Youth Flight Camp—June 18-22

         Junior Aces: 9:00 am—11:00am

Wausau Flying Service has hired Chris MacAdams as our new flight instructor.  Chris currently has his commercial single engine license and instrument rating and will be working on his CFI with John and Robert during the coming months.  We are hoping he will have his license and begin instructing by the end of summer.  We will post more information on the employee page in the coming weeks!
