John, thought I’d say hi and send you a picture. I’ve been here a little over a week now, interesting place. Finally got a minute or two to look at some stuff from home and I hit your website, can’t wait to get back to trees and cool weather. Only here till early August, so not too bad. Dave SMSgt David A. Jordan’s Corner With the new PAPI’s up and running on both Runways 12 and 30, I thought I’d explain exactly what a PAPI is and how it’s different from the VASI we used to have. First off, PAPI stands for Precision Approach Path Indicator. The PAPI has only a single row of lights, instead of two rows like the VASI. The PAPI works similarly to the VASI, in that a perfect three degree glide path to the runway will be indicated by two white lights and two red lights. Being dangerously low on the glide path will be indicated by four red lights, and being high will be indicated by four white lights. With the PAPI you will also be able to see if you are slightly high or slightly low (see figure below). You should be able to see the PAPI from five miles out during the day, and up to 20 miles out at night. Just remember that the PAPI’s won’t come on if you don’t click up the runway lights, even during the day! |
