"BREAKING NEWS!!!" . . ."BREAKING NEWS!!!" . . . "BREAKING NEWS!!!"

Thoughts From the Desk of John P. Chmiel . . .

Don't Be A Bonehead!

I'm on the soap box now, but hear me out.  I will keep this short and sweet.  We are the luckiest people in the world to live in the United States of America.  As aviators, we have more freedom than most other Americans.  That can change real quick.  Don't let it happen.  You have a responsibility as a pilot, aircraft owner, and airport tenant.  You also have a responsibility to help your fellow aviatiors.  So what exactly am I talking about?

"You have a responsibility as a pilot!"

In the last couple months, the non-aviation press has had a field day with a couple bone-head pilots!  These guys were trying to fly from Pennsylvania to West Virginia.  Along the way, they flew right over Washington, D.C., the White House, Supreme Court, and other buildings located in a TFR.  The President & Vice President , the Supreme Court, and a meeting of Congress were evacuated.  Most of you know the rest of the story so I'm not telling it over again.  Bottom line is, the most senior pilot on the aircraft lost his license for a year (the other pilot was a student pilot and probably didn't know better).  He's darn lucky I wasn't the judge, because in my opinion this guy should have been grounded forever!  Since the politicians were affected by this bonehead's SNAFU, there has been quite a bit of debate on capital hill about whether changes should be made regarding general aviation.  These pilots make GA pilots look like idiots to the average U.S. citizen who knows little about general aviation and flying.  Don't think there isn't pressure in Washington to restrict how and where you can fly your GA airplane.  Any more of this kind of stuff and things will change so fast it will make your prop look like its standing still!  So what should you do to prevent yourself from being a bone-head pilot?

  1. Carry your photo I.D. and required pilot paperwork whenever you are at an airport.
  2. Get a weather briefing from flight service before every flight!
It takes less time than looking at the weather machine.  The briefer gives you a complete briefing, including applicable NOTAMS & TFR's.  The briefer decodes everything for you so there is little room for misinterpretation.  Your voice is on the FSS recording and so your butt is officially covered.  TFR's aren't just about Presidential visits.  Did you know that a pop-up TFR was issued around Wisconsin Rapids last month?  How much does your pilot license mean to you?

"You have a responsibility as an aircraft owner!"

The press has also had a field day with a bone-head aircraft owner.  An FBO in Alabama recently had an airplane stolen by a 15-year old student pilot.  When asked if the airplane had been secured, the owner made a remark to the effect that it hadn't happened in 30 years, so maybe he should do something differently now.  Here's the bottom line.  Since 9/11, things have changed.  The non-aviation public perceives GA airplanes as a potential threat to public safety.  As pilots we know that a small aircraft is not likely to be used as a terrorist tool.  But that doesn't matter.  What does matter?  We must assure the general public that we are doing all we can to prevent it from happening.  So what should you do to prevent yourself from being a bone-head aircraft owner?

  1. Remove the ignition keys from your airplane when it is not in use. (if you can)
  2. Lock your airplane doors when you leave your aircraft. (if you can)
  3. Lock your hangar door when you leave.
  4. If the airplane is going to be tied down.  Install a prop lock.
Remember, you're doing this for general aviation.  How much extra effort does it really take?  How much do you love to fly?

"You have a responsibility as an airport tenant!"

Things at airports will never be the same since 9/11.  Get used to it.  Don't look back, because we're never going there again.  Looking back is wasted energy.  Things are different now and things are changing more every day.  Embrace change and it will be easier.  Shortly after 9/11, some questioned what should be done with all the GA airports and their lack of security.  Some suggested closure.  One Mayor wiped their airport off the face of the map and used security as one of the reasons!  Remember Meigs?  AOPA came up with a solution that politicians accepted.  It's called the "Airport Watch" Program.  The Wausau Downtown Airport was one of the first airports to create an Airport Security Plan.  So what can you do to prevent yourself from being a bone-head airport tenant?

  1. Review the Airport Security Plan frequently.
  2. Wait for the security gate to close behind you.
  3. Secure your airplane.
  4. Be the eyes and ears of our security plan.  Tell airport management about burned out lights, broken fences, unsecure gates.  Don't assume we know about it already.
  5. If you see someone you don't know on the airport, greet them, find out their story, make sure they need to be there.  Friendliness is the terrorists worst enemy and the airport's best asset!

We all make mistakes, so let's help each other out.  If you see that WFS has left a hangar door open and no one is around, let us know so we can close it.  If a key has been left in your friend's airplane, let them know.  Maybe make a game out of the picture I.D. check with your fellow pilot friends.  Set an example.  It's for the good of aviation, so embrace the change and it will be easier!

Don't forget.  After 9/11 the airlines got back into the air about a week later.  They didn't let general aviation fly for three weeks.  And we weren't even a factor.  If you don't think this is serious, think again.  Airport security is an important issue.  A recent e-mail I received stated that TSA agents may begin conducting inspections at Wisconsin FBO's in the near future.  Let's be ready.  Aviation and flight is very important to us.  Now let's pull together for the good of aviation!  I am now officially off my soap box!

Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends and if you know of someone who may be interested in receiving "Contact!", email me at taildraggerflyer@yahoo.com.  CAVU and wishes for safe flight to you all!!!

WACO Glider Update

The parts for the WACO glider will be on display during the B-17 visit this weekend!

This Waco CG-4A is on display at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio.  This is what we are striving for.  The fuselage is 48 feet long, and the front 24 feet is our responsibility.  It will be moved to Wausau hopefully in July or August.

"Kevin Wagener and I flew to Iron Mountain on May 23 and met with the Menomenie Range Historical Foundation board of directors.  We discussed the project over lunch.  We looked through a box of glider pictures and blue-prints from the Kalamazoo Air Zoo and picked out the ones that we would like copied.  We then were driven to the John Florecci farm to look at the glider parts that he had.  John told us that his father was one of the Ford plant superintendents during the war, and was put in charge of getting rid of all of the left-over parts when the war ended.  John said that about a dozen semi-loads of glider parts were brought out to the farm and stored there for years.  Most of the parts were donated to various museums around the country, and only a few parts were left now.  I told him that we would take everything that he had left.  After that we drove to the Museum where we saw the Cornish Pump and the Waco Glider fuselage, plus some other parts that had recently been donated.  I told them we will start the restoration as soon as the back of my hangar is available.  Here are a couple of pictures that I took while we were there:"     Syd Cohen

Putt-Putt Patrol Mission De-Briefing

This picture of Dave Viviano should clear up the question of whether "Putt-Putt Patrol" is any fun or not!

Just a quick note to say that Putt-Putt Patrol has turned out to be one of the funnest activities of my aviation career!  You don't have to fly formation to participate.  You don't have to fly a slow airplane.  Everyone can be accommodated.  Non-formation flyers get one altitude, "putt-putt" (slow airplane) formation flyers get another, "vroom-vroom" (faster airplane) formation flyers get another altitude.  This is all briefed prior to the flight.  We've grown with experience and now each patrol includes a pre-flight briefing which includes:

  • designated altitudes for non-formation, putt-putt, & vroom-vroom altitudes
  • flight leader for each group
  • each flight leader briefs the formation on the procedure for that flight
  • weather briefing for the trip
  • airport briefing for the trip
  • debriefing after the flight in Syd Cohen's hangar
Come join us for the fun.  Our numbers are growing every week.

Milestones

That's Joe Jordan after he earned his Instrument Rating in the Wausau Supply Cessna C-182.  WFS CFII Robert Fenske was his instructor and Duffy of Duffy's Aircraft Sales in Marshfield was his examiner.  The Cessna C-182 was sold last week and Joe is now busy flying their new Cirrus SR22 which is based here at the Wausau Airport.

The graduating class from Flight Camp 2005 with their AMA Cubs.  Flight camp doubled in size this year with 35 kids and 7 volunteers.  During the 1-week camp, we built the airplane models, had a tour of the airport, explained how the airplane's controls work with balsa models, flew radio control model airplanes with the Wausau R/C Sportsmen, and each kid also got a Young Eagles flight.

Here's the top three builders from the flight contest!

Another Rental Skyhawk

Wausau Flying Service, Inc. has another Skyhawk for the summer.  It's a 1976 Cessna C-172 with a 180 h.p. conversion.  Fresh paint tops off the exterior and the IFR panel has the Gold Crown King radio package, including DME.  The price is $85/hour.  Come on in and check it out.
