Biography: I joined the Air Force after college to avoid being drafted into the Army. I told the recruiter that I didn’t know a lot about math, but I could read a compass. “Fine,” he said, “we will teach you the rest.” And they did. I finished Undergraduate Pilot Training in Arizona in 1969 and became a combat crew member on a C-130E, eventually moving over to the left seat and flying almost 1,500 hours in the military, including 70 combat missions in Vietnam. I was awarded the Air Medal in 1972. After leaving the Air Force, most of my professional life has been in radio and television, working as a reporter, a news manager, an account manager and a general manager. Broadcasting took me from Green Bay to Eau Claire to Rochester, NY and then Kalamazoo, Duluth, Toledo, Wausau and Rhinelander. Throughout that career I continued to fly general aviation airplanes, and eventually became a flight instructor to pass on my love of flight to others. My wife and I own a beautiful V-tail Bonanza that has taken us on many wonderful trips.
