A Clinic about Stalls/Spins & How to Avoid/Recover from Inadvertent Spin Entry

NTSB and FAA statistics show that the classic “Stall/Spin” scenario is still a common cause of airplane accidents each year.  The question is why?

In the ground portion of this clinic, WFS Flight Instructor John Chmiel (NAFI MCFI) will review the stall/spin accident statistics, stall/spin aerodynamics, proper stall entry and recovery  techniques for power-on & power-off, and advanced stalls.  Normal spins entries and the “PARE” spin recovery technique are reviewed. Stall/spin scenarios will be presented for the classic “cross-controlled” base-to-final stall, “flat footed” departure stall and the “Go Around” trim stall.  Video will be used to graphically push the points home.

The goal of this course is to:  help pilots feel more comfortable with stall entries and recoveries, teach pilots proper control input technique for stall/spin recovery, assist pilots in recognizing stall/spin situations, and help pilots identify and avoid the chain of events that lead up to the classic stall/spin accident.

For those pilots who wish to experience advanced stalls, spins, and spin recoveries, the 3-flight, 3.5 hour flight portion of the program will then apply the knowledge reviewed in the clinic using our Champion 7KCAB Citabria. With addition ground instruction & flight, CFI applicants can earn their spin endorsement.  Flights will include normal & advanced stall entries/recoveries, normal spin entry and recoveries (1, 2 & 3 turns), and stall/spin accident scenario entry & recoveries .  The pilot determines the pace of the course.  If you don’t feel comfortable with stalls, if you’ve never experienced a spin, or if you would like a stall/spin refresher, this is the clinic for you.

* This course counts as an FAA Safety Program (WINGS).
